The ligament is 55 mm long and 3–30 mm wide and is the primary passive restraint to patellar lateral displacement . On MR imaging, the medial retinaculum and the medial femoropatellar ligament are seen as well-defined low-signal-intensity bands but are often difficult to be distinguished from each other (Fig. 7.1) .

It is located superior and anterior to the medial collateral ligament and is part of the medial patellar retinaculum and the intermediate medial capsular layer 1-4 and it forms the medial patellofemoral complex together with the medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament 5.

Femoropatellar ligament

There is often a synovial bursa between the distal part of the ligament and the tibial tuberosity. The medial and lateral femoropatellar ligaments extend from the patellas to the femoral epicondyles and also have attachments to the fabella.

The ligament is adherent to the vastus medialis obliquus, and its fibers may be hidden to a variable extent by the overlying muscle and tendon [ 8 ].

In its distal half, the medial patellar ligament lies over the infrapatellar fat pad. The caudal margin of this ligament is confluent with the 2016-06-23 · The medial and lateral femoropatellar ligaments also aid in stability of the patella within the trochlea. The lateral femoropatellar ligament can be traced from the lateral side of the patella to the lateral fabella.

It is located superior and anterior to the medial collateral ligament and is part of the medial patellar retinaculum and the intermediate medial capsular layer 1-4 and it forms the medial patellofemoral complex together with the medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament 5. Patellofemoral syndrome is a condition that describes pain in the front of the knee and around the kneecap, known as the patella. Doctors may also call patellofemoral syndrome “jumper’s knee J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2009; 91(3):521–529. 10.2106/JBJS.H.00909.

At the femoropatellar joint, the patella slides vertically within a groove on the distal femur. The patella is a sesamoid bone incorporated into the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle, the large muscle of the anterior thigh.

10.1007/s00167-011-1871-8 The lateral femoropatellar ligament is a delicate band of loose fibres, partially blended with the overlying medial retinaculum. It extends from the lateral side of the patella to the condyle of femur (or lateral sesamoid bone of gastrocnemius in carnivores). The PatellarTape System comprises a wide open weave Poly-Tape prosthesis with associated instrumentation and optional Fastlok titanium alloy staple to repair a ruptured patellar tendon, without the need to harvest autogenous tissue. Indications The use of the Poly-Tape for patellar tendon reconstruction The femoropatellar joint compressive force for downhill walking is comparable to running, squatting or downstairs walking.

Available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Japonese, German and Latin. The patellar ligaments are extra-articular, but have a close anatomical relationship with the femoropatellar joint capsule on their caudal aspect and overlying fat cranially. The middle patellar ligament has a well-organised linear fibre pattern in longitudinal ultrasonographic images (Dyson 2002). Patellar ligament injuries are rare but may be seen in jumping horses. The middle patellar ligament is the most commonly affected.
